Osteopathy

Your Osteopath

The role of your Osteopath is to assess the physical issues that may be influencing your health and physical comfort. Osteopathy works on your muscles, joints and nervous system, combining techniques such as massage, bony manipulation, ligamentous balance, cranio-sacral balancing (osteopathy in the cranial field, or cranial osteopathy), stretching and exercise prescription. While very effective in the assessment and treatment of musculoskeletal problems (eg. sciatica, low back pain), Osteopathy can also help with problems as diverse as asthma, migraine, digestive problems and menstrual pain as well as many of the problems experienced during and after pregnancy.

Pregnancy care

Our Osteopaths specialise in pregnancy care, and treat lower back, hip / pelvic, and sciatic pain on a daily basis. They can also address other common problems experienced in pregnancy such as headaches, neck and shoulder pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, leg cramps, fluid retention, and sinus congestion.

Post-natal recovery

It is also important to have an osteopathic treatment within 6 weeks after the birth of your baby. As the pregnancy hormones are still circulating, you have the opportunity to have your body aligned better than ever before. Osteopathy can also help alleviate pain from carrying and feeding your new born. Ergonomic assessment and exercise will also be advised.

Mother and Baby Post-natal check up

A 45-minute appointment to assess the physiological wellbeing of mother and baby after birth.
A great time to get information on returning to exercise and develop an exercise plan, ask questions about your baby's habits and quirks and address aches and pains arising from birth, breastfeeding and sleep changes.
Fee $80

Osteopathic care for children and babies

Paediatric care is an important component of Osteopathy. It involves assisting your baby’s recovery from the forces of birth, and supporting the physical changes of growth and developmental milestones into childhood.

During normal labour an infant’s head is subjected to very large compressive forces. These forces cause the head to undergo a process of ‘moulding’, in which the bones of the skull overlap, bend and warp in order to facilitate its passage through the birth canal. After birth, the skull begins to re-expand and un-mould to return to its normal shape, assisted by the baby crying, suckling and yawning. The head gradually loses most of the moulding pattern during the first ten days of life.

Assisted births, such as forceps, vacuum extraction and caesarean section present special issues and require early assessment to address problems arising from the birth, particularly issues of the neck and skull.

Retained moulding from birth can cause a wide variety of problems for a baby. The effects are individual, and some babies cope better than others. In some cases even quite severe moulding strains may cause no apparent problem as a young baby, but may predispose the child to other problems as they grow up – such as headaches, or an inability to cope well with future trauma. Some of the effects of retained moulding may include:
  • Crying, irritable baby
  • Excessive feeding
  • Infantile colic
  • Recurrent illness
  • Need for pacifier or thumb sucking
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Head scratching, rocking and banging
  • Head shape

In the growing child Osteopathy is also effective in treating conditions such as:

  • Infections
  • Ear infections and “glue ear”
  • Sinus problems and mouth breathers
  • Delayed milestones such as crawling and walking
  • Behavioural problems and hyperactivity
  • Learning difficulties
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Headaches and other aches and pains
  • Asthma
  • Dental development
  • Development of the spine
Treatment of babies

Our Osteopaths are experienced and confident in treating and assessing babies and children of all ages. Assessment and treatment is gentle, non-invasive and safe. Mostly the very gentle techniques of Osteopathy in the Cranial Field are applied.

Cranial Osteopathy

What is Cranial Osteopathy?

This is a very subtle and gentle approach to the treatment of the whole body. Cranial osteopathy is not different to osteopathy; it simply recognizes the importance of the subtle mechanics at work within the head, and their profound influence on the health of the whole body. Osteopaths who practice cranial techniques undergo post-graduate training in order to do so.
